Many people ask me “Why would you start a blog and give away secrets and information, doesn’t that threaten your business and how you make a living? “
My answer: Absolutely not! I fully understand that there are some people that don’t have the money to hire someone to make over their space or furniture at the moment. They want to know how to try and do it themselves which leads them to search the internet for information! I want to help by sharing some of my knowledge and getting them headed in the right direction. I also feel very strongly that knowledge is power and we all have something in our lives that we can do better than the average bear. Sharing that know-how with someone else is powerful and not only creates a bond but also creates the most wonderful feeling when you see someone else enjoying what you love to do!
This doesn’t cause me to worry about lost profit or potential threats to my business because guess what? There are MANY things that can and should only be done by someone with experience, there are also just as many clients who don’t have the time, energy, or ability to complete projects and would much rather hire someone to do it. Just like with any other expertise such as electrical work, plumbing, woodworking, and masonry- hiring out on bigger projects is the best way to get the job done right the first time.
Time=Money. If you don’t have one, your going to spend the other to make up for it.
Up until a few years ago I couldn’t have shelled out money for even the most budget friendly designer to help me makeover furniture or my home. It’s frustrating when you see all these beautifully curated magazine pages, Pinterest photos, and bloggers homes that make you green with envy.
Now that I look back however, it was a blessing in disguise because it forced me to dive deeper and draw out the creative side of myself I had hidden away during college, another career, and general life stress. My obsession with research and knowledge, combined with my creative ability lead me to the place I’m in now…and I wouldn’t want it any other way. When I think about how much I’ve grown and what I’ve accomplished since I started my business 5 years ago, those who believed in my ability from day 1, and the happiness it has brought to my life and the clients I have served I cannot think of a more wonderful thing to share with other’s who are looking for something similar.
That being said, when I mention that there are many things that should only be done by an experienced professional, I mean it. I share some of my fun projects and current work in hopes of sparking someone else to try it on their own. However- I’ve put in thousands of hours, made hundreds of mistakes, learned from some of the best, and retained knowledge that only years of experience can teach you. Sometimes the vision requires that expertise and while I’m not one to say “Don’t do that” I will tell you “Go for it! Just make sure you can afford to call someone in if it doesn’t work out”.
You can learn to do almost anything if you put enough time and energy into it…want to be a mechanic? Become a clothing designer? Be a marketing wiz? Design cutting edge websites? It’s all possible, if you have the time and drive to become amazing at it. Most things in life aren’t interesting enough to actually put the effort into becoming an expert. That’s where people like me come in. Say you just purchased a new house, but it’s dated and needs a complete overhaul. Along with the general contractor, electrician, and plumber your also going to need someone who can help you create a large vision and bring it to life.
Some projects are overwhelming and can easily come to a halt if you attempt to go too big, too fast by yourself. This is why I’m not threatened by giving advice and knowledge “away”. I could tell you how to repaint your vehicle, but it doesn’t mean your going to do it. Knowledge doesn’t make up for experience but it does sometimes help start a conversation and spark something inside of those who hear it.
If you’d like my expertise on a furniture refresh or home/room design I can offer assistance! I also offer a designer discount for furniture and home projects. I’m always happy to help those who live far away via email and conversations as well. Technology has made amazing things possible by sending photos and inspiration boards.
Don’t shy away from getting help just because of the perceived money it may cost! You’d be amazed at the budget friendly options that I can offer just to help you create a vision. You can then execute the vision yourself, and if you’re located in southern California I can always step in and take over if it becomes too much and you decide it’s better to save the headache and have it taken care of.
Whatever the case, consultations are always free and I can be reached via email or phone if you have any questions about my services or your design!
